The Pink Soldier
Based on Le Soldat Rose (2006), French children’s musical album by Louis Chedid and Pierre-Dominique Burgaud
This project is a concept design book for a reinvented version of “Le Soldat Rose” (“The Pink Soldier” for translation purposes). The original Pink Soldier is a French children’s musical album that follows the story of a little boy facing fears of growing up. Music is by French singer Louis Chédid and his son Matthieu, lyrics are by Pierre-Dominique Burgaud with many French artists lending their voices. I have grown up with this album very close to my heart, and wanted to create a full visual world for it, which is this very book you are reading. With no existing visuals on this album (except the album cover), I have designed every character and environment, turning the Pink Soldier into a would-be animated movie.
Short Summary
The Pink Soldier follows Joseph, a little boy who is afraid of growing up. So one night, he hides in a Parisian toy shop on Christmas Eve and discovers that, once the doors close, the toys come to life. Among them is the Pink Soldier, a lonely toy who has spent years mourning the fiancée from whom he was separated long ago. As Joseph is welcomed into their strange and magical world, he learns the stories of the forgotten toys and gradually begins to understand what it means to miss the people you love. By dawn, Joseph is reunited with his worried family, while the Pink Soldier unexpectedly finds his fiancée. A story about childhood, loneliness, friendship and reunion, The Pink Soldier celebrates the importance of never completely losing the way a child sees the world.
