Set and Costume Design (2026)
Play: Fun Home by Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori (2015)
Designed for the Wimbledon College of Arts Theatre, London.
This project was in collaboration with the MA Directing course from Birkbeck, we were paired up one director to one designer.
Fun Home follows Alison Bechdel at three stages of her life: as a child, a college student, and an adult cartoonist, as she reflects on her relationship with her father, Bruce.
The story, taken from the real Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir (2006), is non-linear, moving between past and present as Alison tries to understand her father, a closeted gay man who ran the family funeral home (the ‘Fun Home’). As she comes to terms with her own sexuality, she begins to see parallels with her father’s hidden life. The narrative builds toward his sudden and ambiguous death, which may have been suicide.
Rather than a straightforward plot, the musical is structured as an act of remembering. Alison revisiting, questioning, and attempting to make sense of her past through fragments.
Fun Home is about reconstructing identity and truth through memory, where the past is constantly revisited, reinterpreted, and never fully resolved.
This means a fragmented design, which for me had to be non-naturalistic.
